Shrubs
We keep a very large and diverse selection of shrubs from a host of independant local and european suppliers.
Azalea / Rhododendron
Both produce a burst of colour in April and May, in almost every colour, from whites, pinks and purples to reds, oranges and yellows.
Azaleas are usually deciduous, while rhododendrons are almost always evergreen. They are best grown in shade and need ericaceous (acidic) soil.
Calycanthus
This attractive deciduous shrub has oval green leaves that gradually turn soft yellow as the season progresses. In May, it produces large, fragrant flowers in red or white, which appear at the ends of the branches and create a lovely spring display.
After flowering, decorative urn-shaped seed capsules form and remain on the plant through winter, adding extra interest to the garden. A reliable and rewarding shrub, it provides colour and structure across several seasons.
Camelia
Camellias are elegant evergreen shrubs, available in upright or spreading forms, with glossy dark green leaves and beautiful flowers in shades of white, pink and red. Their blooms bring welcome colour to the garden from late winter into spring.
They make a striking addition to shrub borders and are equally well suited to containers. Camellias can also be grown informally in light woodland beneath deciduous trees. For best results, plant in ericaceous (acidic), well-drained soil and a sheltered position.
Cornus kousa
A large shrub or small, bushy tree offering interest across the seasons. Its oval green leaves create a handsome canopy through summer before turning rich reddish-purple in autumn, providing excellent seasonal colour.
In late spring, tight clusters of small white flowers appear, each surrounded by four large, creamy-white bracts that create a striking, star-like display. These are followed by distinctive strawberry-like deep pink fruits, adding further ornamental appeal. A superb choice for bringing structure, colour and long-lasting interest to the garden.
Hamamelis
Commonly known as Witch Hazel, Hamamelis is prized for its wonderfully fragrant, spidery flowers that appear in winter, in glowing shades of yellow, orange and red. Blooming on bare branches, the flowers provide welcome colour and scent during the colder months.
It makes an excellent specimen plant, where its unusual blooms can be fully appreciated. Particularly effective when underplanted with early bulbs such as snowdrops, winter aconites and crocuses, Hamamelis brings life and interest to the winter garden.
Hydrangea
An impressive shrub that brings vibrant colour to borders from mid to late summer, Hydrangeas are loved for their showy yet delicate flowerheads in shades of pink, white and blue. Their blooms last for weeks, creating a striking and reliable seasonal display.
Many varieties also offer attractive foliage and beautiful autumn colour, adding further interest as the season changes. We stock a range of types, including macrophylla, lacecap and paniculata, each with its own distinctive style to suit different garden settings.
Japanese Maple
These small, deciduous trees are most popular for their autumn colour displays with largely varied foliage. Mostly slow-growing, they are known for the traditional Japanese garden style.
They can be planted in the ground or in containers, preferring shade, shelter and an ericaceous (acidic) soil.
Pittosporum
A neat and versatile evergreen shrub, Pittosporum is ideal for sheltered, sunny positions. Available in a range of forms — from larger, upright varieties to compact, rounded shapes — it offers glossy foliage that is often attractively variegated or tinted with subtle colour.
In late spring, small, lightly scented flowers add further appeal. Pittosporum responds well to pruning, making it suitable for hedging or clipping into simple shapes. It is an excellent, low-maintenance alternative to Buxus, bringing year-round structure and interest to the garden.
